Four Quarters

Four Quarters of the Day

The quarter of the heavens that is rising but still below the horizon, the dark hours of the morning is shown here with these two trigrams. In the astrological houses this represents a period of subjective (below the horizon) instigation (rising). It is called the phase of intuition.

The quarter of the heavens that is rising and above the horizon, the light hours of the morning is shown here with these two trigrams. In the astrological houses this represents a period of objective (above the horizon) instigation (rising). It is called the phase of thinking.

The quarter of the heavens that is setting and above the horizon, the light hours of the afternoon is shown here with these two trigrams. In the astrological houses this represents a period of objective (above the horizon) reaction (setting). It is called the phase of sensation or sensitivity.

The quarter of the heavens that is setting and below the horizon, the dark hours of the evening is shown here with these two trigrams. In the astrological houses this represents a period of subjective (below the horizon) reaction (setting). It is called the phase of feeling.

Here we see the full cycle of the trigrams arranged around the wheel. The colours of the trigrams are presented in their correct positions and sequence for the cycle of the day. The greatest brightness is at the top for noon, and the greatest darkness is at the bottom. One can see the corresponding three solid lines for the greatest brightness, and the three broken lines for the greatest darkness. Actually, the greatest brightness is the period leading right up to noon (true noon), but not a second after it. The greatest darkness is likewise the period leading up to true midnight but not a second after it.

May the Force be with you!
